Abstract

In our experience, students learn best when a lesson combines motivating material with memorable exposure to language through a series of meaningful tasks. Motivation, Memory and Meaning - 'the 3 Ms'. This practical session will explore ways in which topics, texts and tasks can reflect these priorities and help teachers to create the optimum classroom conditions for learning to take place.

Abstract

There’s the vocabulary syllabus in the book. Then there are the words and expressions that tend to come up in lessons unexpectedly – vocabulary that is hastily scribbled on the board and then wiped off at the end of the lesson. Without systematic recording and recycling neither forms of input are likely to become intake. This session will demonstrate how FOCUS equips students and teachers with a wide variety of classroom ideas on how to record vocabulary effectively and what to do with it once recorded.

Abstract

Children today seem to be changing the way they respond to stimuli and this affects the way they act in the classroom. We need to present challenging tasks that can help them play effectively and learn from this play to put them on the language ladder. This session will look at some of the techniques we can use to encourage and enhance young learners to help activate their language learning while keeping them occupied and having fun.

Abstract

The 21stcentury teacher needs to be an expert in modern methods and ensure that students are engaged and motivated to succeed in a changing world. To help with this, teachers need the right tools. With considerations like performance-based learning, technology and CLIL it's easy to get lost in methodology and new approaches and lose sight of our learners' needs, this session looks at how we can incorporate modern ideas into our current classrooms.
