Abstract

Students bring their own learner styles and motivation into the classroom and quite often there isn't a smooth fit between what's on page 24 and who's in room 3. We need to create an environment that encourages engagement and creates contexts that get the communication bubbling and stimulate collaboration, this isn't so easy when there's a range of ability in the classroom and they're all using the same course book. With these points in mind, it is obvious that we need to be selective and adaptive with the material and use it creatively to fit the needs of our learners. This session will look at some simple tasks and activities that will allow us to do exactly that.

Soft skills vs Hard skills: what is the difference? Hard skills are teachable and can be measured. In contrast, soft skills are less tangible and harder to quantify. How to define, develop, prioritize and find the balance? In this presentation we are going to understand the benefits of both.

Abstract

Adaptive learning matches your students' needs with other stakeholders and allows you to use a modular approach in a fresh partnership between business and English. With examples from Pearson's Business Partner we'll look at how to fit the book around the students rather than the other way round. This allows us to create a personalised course that suits their requirements and lets us really get down to the business of teaching, so our learners no longer feel trapped on page 17 but can track their progress to proficiency with clear goals and graded tasks to move them along the learning path.

Abstract

Digital divide and globalisation have yielded significantly positive and negative outcomes in educational sphere and in the 3rd millennial's portrait. They have driven to the need of acquiring new competences and skills necessary to enhance the economic, socio-cultural capital of the student. Consequently, learners have to obtain not only up-to-date skills but also their personalities are continually undergoing colossal changes. There is made an attempt to reveal some of the worrying issues and their causes. Afterwards, we suggest some teaching strategies for the 21st c. ELT professionals to cope with millennials' multifaced identity.
